How To: Destinkify Costumes Between Performances

Sep 01

You all have smelled it. And boy, you know how bad it can get! Yes, I’m talking about costumes… those costumes that just sit there in your dressing rooms, smelling like B.O. and goodness knows what else after you have danced in them. Unfortunately, a lot of them (especially tutus and men’s tunics) are pretty difficult to wash, so they just sit there between performances. Thank goodness there’s a solution for that! This is something I learned from my mom (resident costume lady), who learned it from I have no idea where.

What you do is make a mixture of one part vodka (yes, vodka, you can use the cheapest vodka you can find) and one part water, and put it in a spray bottle. The spray generously on costumes, and voila! A decent smelling (or at least not stinking) costume, and much more tolerable dressing rooms.

How much is generously? Enough to make them thoroughly damp, or…?

Yeah… until they are wet. Then hang them up so they can dry overnight for your performances the next day.
