How To: Keep Pointe Shoe Ribbons from Fraying

Sep 13

When you sew your pointe shoes, you typically cut your ribbons shorter so you don’t have a long tail when you tie your ribbons. Unfortunately, this causes most ribbons to begin to fray, which can be a huge problem if they fray too much. So what do you do? Take a lighter (with adult supervision) and pass the edge of your ribbon through the flame a few times. Keep your fingers at a safe distance from the flame. This should melt the edge of the ribbon and create a sort of seam so your ribbon will no longer fray.

    This totally works!

I’ve never tried this method, but using clear nail polish and swiping it across the tips of the ribbon works well, too!

I’ve been told to fold the end of the ribbons and sew it together. It never worked for me but I’ve tried the clear nail polish (like Emmy suggested) and found that it works wonders! I always keep a bottle in my bag because it stops the runs in my tights as well.

What I do is cut the ribbons the length needed, as suggested light the end of my ribbons, then also paint some clear nail polish on the ends. Works like a charm
